The MBA dissertation is an original, 10,000- to 25,000-word document that is required to satisfy the requirements for an MBA degree. MBA dissertations can be research-based studies of company or industry-wide issues within the MBA candidate's field of interest. They can also be case studies, business plans, or feasibility studies geared toward improving the effective marketing and production of a given product or service.

While it is an academic document, the MBA dissertation can have real-world applications. Many universities requiring MBA dissertations encourage their students to work directly with actual businesses. A student might analyze and report on situations facing these businesses, and suggest ways to improve company performance. In this way, MBA dissertations can provide real benefits to the company involved and can give the student invaluable practice in strategic planning for the industry in which he or she seeks employment.

MBA dissertation requirements vary by university, so each student should start the MBA dissertation process by checking with his or her department chair for a list of requirements and guidelines. The chair can also help the student discover any resources available, such as the possibility of teaming up with a company. The MBA dissertation writing process will be overseen by an academic advisor, who can help the student develop a list of possible MBA dissertation topics and choose one which will satisfy the university's requirements while providing a valuable learning opportunity for the student.

One way to develop an appropriate MBA dissertation topic is to scan lists of MBA dissertations that have been completed by successful students. Since MBA dissertations frequently focus on the activities of a specific company, covering a similar topic but with a different company or within a different industry can lead to a thoroughly original study and a successful MBA dissertation. Very often in business, the solution to a given business problem can come from a similar solution in a different industry, and the resourceful student will be aware of strategies and procedures in a wide array of industries.

A well-researched, well-written MBA dissertation gives the student an edge when the degree is earned and the job search process begins. Careful planning and attention to detail will serve the student well as he or she completes the MBA dissertation and enters the post-graduate job market.

The dissertation methodology is a section within the doctoral dissertation that describes the original research the candidate has conducted in preparation for earning his or her PhD. Following are some tips in writing successful dissertation methodologies.

The key to an effective dissertation methodology is defining a relevant research study. Depending on the subject matter, a dissertation methodology may be either qualitative or quantitative. Wherever possible, quantitative research, such as subjecting a random sample of research subjects to statistical analysis, should be strongly considered. In the physical sciences and many of the social sciences, quantitative research is expected in dissertation methodologies. In the liberal arts, however, qualitative research is often the only correct option.

In defining a methodology, the candidate should consider the literature in his or her field. His or her goal should be a dissertation methodology that builds on prior research, but doesn't duplicate the work of research reported in prior dissertations.

Dissertation methodologies are frequently arranged in four subsections: participants, instruments, procedure, and data analysis. The participants include those conducting the study as well as any research subjects involved. The instruments section describes any instruments or methods used to gather the data. The procedure section describes the way in which the data was gathered. The data analysis describes the way in which the gathered data was analyzed, such as whether it was subjected to statistical modeling.

When crafting dissertation methodologies, it is crucial to make no assumptions that cannot be backed up with research or evidence of extensive study. When writing the dissertation methodology, one must ask oneself if each statement made or procedural element described is grounded within the overall methodology of the research study. When the time comes to orally defend the dissertation methodology, the doctoral candidate must be certain each component of the research and the written dissertation document itself is carefully crafted to avoid lapses in critical thinking or of careful planning.

As the core subject matter of any doctoral work, the dissertation methodology will be carefully scrutinized by the candidate's board of advisors. Careful thought must be given to its design and implementation, and the relevance of its placement within the context of the doctoral candidate's field of study.

The sociology dissertation is an in-depth and original discussion of a doctoral candidate's sociology research. It is required to satisfy the requirements of a doctorate in sociology and is usually written after all coursework is completed and a research study has been carried out.

Prior to writing the sociology dissertation, the candidate will conduct research in a major subject area of interest. This research must focus on a specific question, or hypothesis, which the candidate will answer and discuss. The key to an effective research topic is to define a narrow, specific research question that can be effectively explored in the sociology dissertation, yet displays the candidate's extensive comprehension of the wider field of sociology. This research may be qualitative or quantitative, though quantitative research that exposes social interaction to the rigors of statistical analysis and empirical investigation has been highly regarded in recent years.

The candidate defines an appropriate sociology dissertation topic by choosing a subset of the sociology discipline, such as the study of deviant behavior. Within this subset, the candidate narrows the focus until a unique and original topic is defined. Deviant behavior, for instance, could be narrowed to terrorism, which could further be narrowed to a specific terrorist group, or a comparison of the methods and effects of several related terrorist actions.

Sociology dissertations follow the standard format of all doctoral dissertations, and generally consist of five major sections: introduction, literature review, methodology, results, and discussion. The candidate states the dissertation's central question, or hypothesis, in the introduction, and briefly describes the research done and conclusion reached. In the literature review, the candidate lists and discusses previously published articles and sociology dissertations on related topics and explains how they relate to the candidate's own dissertation topic.

In the methodology section, the candidate describes the research methods used. In the results section, the candidate notes the results of this research. In the discussion section, the candidate draws conclusions based on these results, including whether they prove or disprove the candidate's hypothesis. The candidate also relates the narrow topic of his or her research to the broader field, and suggests potential related hypothesis that might be tested in future sociology dissertations.

While the dissertation abstract is the first section of the dissertation that a reader is likely to view, it is normally the last section the candidate will complete. The dissertation abstract is a brief document summarizing the full dissertation research and discussion. It is intended to introduce the dissertation in online and print journals in the candidate's field. It is essentially an "advertisement" for the dissertation which others will use to determine whether or not to read it. Here are some tips for writing successful dissertation abstracts.

Mention key terms:
Prospective readers will scan lists of dissertation abstracts in search of topics relevant to their own fields. They may also perform keyword searches online. Prominent mention of key terms in the candidate's topic will help the dissertation find an audience of interested colleagues.

Brevity:
The ideal dissertation abstract is no more than four hundred words long. Very few details of the actual research need to be mentioned. The abstract must present an overview of the research conducted and the questions answered. A succinct, economically written abstract will be more likely to attract readers.

Focus:
The dissertation abstract should only discuss the topic and research included in the dissertation. The candidate should take care not to stray into related topics, or to discuss some detail that was not included in the body of the full dissertation. If one is adhering to the guideline of brevity discussed above, then extraneous details will most likely not be an issue.

Completeness:
While dissertation abstracts must be brief, they must also be complete. The writer must touch on each aspect of the research and discussion contained in the full dissertation.

Since it must be so short and focused, yet cogently summarize a long and in-depth document, writing the dissertation abstract can be a daunting task. The best approach is simply to write a first draft without regard for perfection and word count. The resulting document can then be revised and edited down until it reaches the proper length and quality of focus.

A successful marketing dissertation, like the dissertation in any field, must begin with an original and engaging topic. Brainstorming ideas prior to the researching and planning the marketing dissertation will make all the difference. The successful student will take care not to rush this process. Successful brainstorming starts with narrowing one's focus.

Marketing dissertations have focused on all aspects of the marketing field, from branding and competition to pricing and product performance. To successfully brainstorm marketing dissertation ideas, one can review the coursework taken and the specific companies studied. What specific topics have been most interesting? The marketing dissertation research and writing process will consume many hours and many thousands of words. Focusing on a topic that holds the degree candidate's interest is crucial.

Is there a company case study that has been particularly fascinating to delve into? Is there a company the candidate wishes he or she could have the opportunity to study? What aspects of this company's marketing strategy are most fascinating? Has this company made mistakes? Have similar mistakes been made by competitors, or by companies in related markets? Successful marketing dissertations can be built around research into questions like these.

When one has identified an interesting topic or marketing strategy to research, the next question is what metrics can be applied to this strategy's effect on the marketplace? Successful marketing dissertations rely on the reporting and analysis of measurable outcomes. If there is a source of data to analyze and draw conclusions from, then the topic at hand has tremendous potential as a marketing dissertation topic.

The marketing dissertation must show evidence of the candidate's original and critical thinking about the topic at hand. With the explosion of Internet marketing, there is no shortage of new topics, strategies, and case studies to explore. The wise student will look to the cutting edge of technology and its effects on the way products and services are marketed today. An original, in-depth marketing dissertation on some aspect of the rapidly evolving online marketing world will serve the student well once he or she has earned the degree and begun his or her real-world career.

Writing the dissertation is the most difficult task a student will face in pursuit of his or her doctorate. Many PhD candidates complete their coursework and research but put off dissertation writing for years out of fear that their dissertations will not survive the rigorous review of their board of advisors. But dissertation writing, like any other large project, can be done if one cultivates the proper mindset. Here are some ideas consider when beginning the dissertation writing process.

Banish Fear:
One must approach dissertation writing with the belief that it can be done and done well. One important fact to remember is that, like any piece of writing, dissertation writing doesn't have to be perfect at first. All writing is drafted and revised. The fear of putting words on paper because they might not be perfect must be conquered.

Focus:
Once the obstacle of fear has been removed, one should reflect on the topic at hand. Dissertation writing requires attention to a specific, narrow aspect of the candidate's field. The more clearly the candidate defines the topic, the more easily the dissertation writing will flow.

Review the Literature:
Dissertation writing must ask and answer an original question within the candidate's field of interest. Doctoral coursework always includes extensive study of others' work in the field, and the candidate will no doubt have kept abreast of recent dissertation writing by colleagues in the field. What topics have other dissertations covered, and what questions remain to be answered? In many cases, dissertation writing and academic papers by others in the field will suggest a related project or leave an open question that begs to be answered.

Draft:
As stated above, dissertation writing does not have to flow perfectly the first time the candidate sets fingers to keyboard. Begin the first draft with the knowledge that it can be revised. Arguments can be strengthened and awkward sentences can be re-written. Often, first-draft dissertation writing can help the writer clarify his or her thinking, resulting in insights that were elusive before the dissertation writing process began.

While many sources are available online and in books that can advise the student on how to structure a dissertation proposal, a very effective way to learn what is required is to obtain and refer to a dissertation proposal example.

A dissertation proposal example is a dissertation proposal that was written and submitted by someone else – either a student who has already begun work on his or her dissertation, a professor at the university, or some other colleague the student knows who is working in a similar field. This dissertation proposal example will of course be on a different topic, but this will not be a concern, because the main things a student will seek to learn from a dissertation proposal example are the proper structuring and format of a dissertation proposal.

If the student cannot find a dissertation proposal example by consulting other students and faculty at the university, it may be possible to locate one or more dissertation proposal examples online. Many universities maintain web pages designed to help their students learn the various guidelines and expectations for completing assignments. If such a resource is not available through the student's own university, then the web pages published by other universities are frequently available to everyone. These can be a valuable source for students in need of a dissertation proposal example.

If a student does locate guidelines and a sample dissertation proposal through another university, he or she should check with his or her department or faculty advisor to make sure there aren't any "house style" rules governing dissertation proposals which are different from the rules the student obtained online. If a university or department does have house style rules, hopefully the advisor will have advised the student of this ahead of time. It is best to check, however, before accepting all of the formatting and structural guidelines the student will find in the dissertation proposal example.

A student of accounting may be called upon to complete an accounting dissertation for his or her Bachelor's, Master's, or Doctorate degree. An accounting dissertation is a comprehensive, substantial written report covering original research and thinking on a given accounting topic.

To begin planning the accounting dissertation, a student should first carefully review the assignment with regard to word length, choice of topics, style, and formatting requirements. The student should check with his or her professor or faculty advisor to determine if there are any house style guidelines or expectations governing dissertations in the department.

Locating and reviewing examples of previously completed accounting dissertations can be a significant aid to a student planning an accounting dissertation. Example accounting dissertations can show a student the kinds of research questions that are asked and the kind of research that is conducted for dissertation projects. While the student should design his or her own research project, having access to the work of others can be instructive and inspiring.

Once a student has defined a topic – hot topics in accounting currently include the trend toward greater government regulation of the financial system, the pros and cons of Fair Use and historical accounting systems, and revenue recognition – the student will design and conduct research on this topic. Accounting dissertation research often involves case study work in which the actions of governments and companies in the real world are studied and analyzed. The student should also conduct a thorough review of all relevant research in the leading accounting journals, dissertations by students on related topics, and any other relevant research that bears on the student's topic.

After the research project has been completed, the student will be ready to outline and write the accounting dissertation. Accounting dissertations generally include an introduction, a literature review in which the student reports on the related research, a methodology in which the student describes the research he or she conducted, and results and discussion sections in which the student reports on and then interprets the results of the research. Finally, a conclusion section wraps up and summarizes the accounting dissertation.

The dissertation format is fairly standardized across all academic subjects and disciplines. The student beginning the dissertation process should always consult with his or her faculty advisor to make sure there are no "house style" rules governing the dissertation format for dissertations submitted at the student's university. If there are any house rules, however, they will likely be minor changes and the following components of standard dissertation format will most likely all be present.

Dissertation format encompasses two aspects of the dissertation: the formatting of the paper itself, with respect to title pages, supporting chapters, appendices, etc., and the content of the dissertation. The mechanical aspects of dissertation format, including the arrangement of the elements on the title page, the structure of the table of contents, the page numbers and running heads, and other elements, are mostly governed by the style manual that is preferred in the academic field in which the student is working. Most social sciences will require APA dissertation format, while humanities subjects will often require the use of MLA style. In historical research, dissertation format often follows Chicago style. The student will most likely already be aware of the preferred style in his or her field, but he or she should always check with the advisor to be certain.

With respect to the content aspects of dissertation format, most dissertations have the following chapters: Introduction, Literature Review, Methodology, Results, Discussion, and Conclusion. In the introduction, the student can state the research topic and briefly summarize the body of the dissertation and the findings obtained through the research. In the literature review, the student conducts an extensive discussion of prior research in the field, both to provide a context for his or her research project, and to show that a need still exists for the student's own research.

In the methodology, the student discusses the research study in detail. The student must take care to provide a rationale for each decision he or she has made regarding the methods of conducting the research. In the results chapter, the student reports on the research results. In the case of statistical analyses, the student would note which results are statistically significant and which are not. In the discussion, the student interprets the findings, and draws conclusions he or she has been led to draw through this research. In the conclusion, the student summarizes the entire dissertation once more, notes any limitations to the current study, and suggests possible future research on the topic.

A dissertation research question is a question that the student poses within the text of the dissertation, and which shows the direction the student's research will take. Whatever a student is trying to learn from a dissertation research project, it is useful to define it through the use of one or more research questions.

A student may include as many dissertation research questions as he or she likes in the dissertation, as long as he or she intends to address all of them. Each research question should be related to the topic at hand. Often, the research project will be designed to answer all of the dissertation research questions at once.

The place where the student usually poses the dissertation research questions is toward the end of the literature review. Once the student has discussed the work that has (and has not) been done on the topic by discussing the literature, he or she can pose the questions which will be answered by his or her own research. If there are more than one dissertation research question, it is customary to number them so they can be referred to later, in the results and discussion sections. It is also customary to abbreviate the term "research question" to RQ. Thus, a student's dissertation research questions should adhere to the following format:

RQ #1: What will the effects of…?
RQ #2: How will the …?
RQ #3: For subjects in the second group, what will…?

Often, dissertation research questions will be followed shortly afterwards by proposed answers, stated as hypotheses. A Hypothesis is a guess regarding the outcome of the research based on the student's prior knowledge of the subject matter and the outcomes of previous research studies. Hypotheses are also numbered to correspond with their related dissertation research questions, as follows:

H #1: The effects will be…
H #2: The sample will be found to…
H #3: For subjects in the second group, the outcome will…

Dissertation research questions are an excellent way for students to organize the discussion within their dissertations. Students should study existing dissertations for further examples of how they are used.
